The home phone may be on its last ring.
Spark's announced the cost of its fixed line service will increase by around four dollars a month, affecting over a million households.
This follows the Commerce Commission's ruling which allows Chorus to charge phone companies more for its copper lines - a move described as the death of the land line.
Tech commentator Owen Williams told Newstalk ZB's Mike Hosking that phone companies are almost pricing themselves out of the market.
"This is the time of year where everyone kind-of looks at their bill and go, 'I'm paying $40 for a landline who calls me up, apart from telemarketers'.
"With naked broadband nowadays, you can get just the internet connection without the phone."
