Police in Napier remain mystified over the identify of a man found dead in the central city a week ago.

The man was found deceased in an alleyway last Monday morning.

His death is not being treated as suspicious.

Despite public pleas for information, no one has come forward to confirm his identity.

Detective Sergeant John McCarthy says it's a complete mystery and they're hoping to get some closure for this man's family.

The man in his 50s or 60s, is a Maori or Polynesian, of solid build with grey receding hair and a grey goatee.

He has two distinctive tattoos of a snake wrapped around a skull and a sword and a line of narrow squares.
