The Labour Party's $100 million transport proposal for the Garden City is being welcomed by the City Councillor for Christchurch Central.

Labour Leader Andrew Little is proposing a rail service from Rolleston to the CBD, and better infrastructure for bus services.

He said the money would come from the National Land Transport Fund to address growing congestion.

Councillor Deon Swiggs said it's good to see an election policy specific to the Garden City.

"It's really good to finally see something from a party directly related to Christchurch. The current party have be fairly quiet about Christchurch," he said.

However the rail plans could ruffle a few feathers in the city's Joint Transport Committee.

The Committee's which are made up of both the district councils and regional council, rejected the public campaign for a rail service in May.

Swiggs said Labour's plans for a train are likely to get the same reception.

"There is a resistance and look I think the NZTA model as a whole is quite car heavy."
