The Labour Weekend road toll remains at one, as motorists avoided serious incident overnight.

But a fatal accident on the Dairy Flat highway north of Auckland only half an hour into the official road toll period, has police upset.

Road policing manager Superintendent Carey Griffiths says he was saddened to hear of the incident.

He says with every crash, it's about the people involved and those left behind, not just the numbers.
