Labour say they will drop Pora appeal

Labour will withdraw the Crown's appeal against Teina Pora's compensation if they get in Government.

The High Court has ruled Mr Pora should have had his compensation adjusted for inflation in his payout, for wrongly spending 20 years in prison.

National's Justice Minister Amy Adams has filed a notice of appeal to put the case on hold.

Ms Adams said the appeal was lodged to maintain a holding pattern until a new Government is formed.

Labour MP Andrew Little said he believes Pora's case should be resolved quickly and fairly.

"Of all the cases that we've seen in New Zealand of miscarriages of justice his deserves proper justice and fairness and adjusting his payment for inflation is what that takes."

Mr Little said Labour will drop the appeal if it gets into Government, but says he understands why National has taken the step at this time.

"So they haven't said no, they just haven't said yes in a timely fashion, so as disappointing as that is for Teina Pora I think it's a matter of weeks away before this thing gets finalised in my view."
