Kiwis called on to get knitting for kittens

The Auckland SPCA is calling on Kiwis to help prevent a cat-astrophe.

They have run out of woolly mice, which are given to all cats and kittens when they're adopted out.

A team of dedicated volunteers work around the year knitting up a storm to keep the kitty's happy but the summer influx has seen them unable to keep up with demand.

Chief executive Andrea Midgen says it's far from purr-fect.

"Usually we have a good supply but we've just gone through the bigger part of summer so we've run out at this stage."

She says it's a claws for concern as the wee toys are something many of the cats come to cherish.

"Each kitten gets given a mouse to take home with it, they absolutely adore playing with them and we've had feedback from people who have adopted from us that often years and years later they are still playing with them."

To fill the void Midgen is putting the call out for volunteers to whisk up some woolly companions.

"Anybody that is any good at knitting or crocheting if you could make some mice for us that would be fantastic."

She says there is also another way people could help out all around the country.

"We've got lots of kittens and cats for adoption, so you could help us out with that as well."
