Kiwi airline backer says new airline 'sustainable'

A one-time fraudster insists his plan to operate a new passenger service out of Whenuapai airport will fly despite all the evidence stacked up against it ever coming to fruition.

Ewen Wilson's Kiwi International Airlines collapsed in the 1990s, left hundreds of passengers stranded and led to fraud convictions.

Wilson says this time it's all above board.

"Yeah very much, so the capital is going to be there."

"We've learned a lot from 20 years ago. By buying our aircraft rather than leasing our aircraft we're going to be sustainable and well resourced."

However the prospect of Whenuapai being used as a commercial airport has been raised and the government has repeatedly said Whenuapai will only ever operate as a military airbase.

Upper Harbour Local Board chairman Brian Neeson says Mr Wilson's a dreamer, and his idea "insane".
