Southland is positioning itself as the country's latest nature tourism destination.
The Invercargill City Council's invested more than $400,000 in a new Kakapo chick raising facility for Southland Museum.
City Councillor Karen Arnold says the facility is a win-win, boosting conservation and tourism.
"Till this point basically everything about Kakapo has taken place on an island the public don't have access to so it's a really special opportunity."
Karen Arnold says this will be the public's first chance to really learn about the birds and their story.
