The nurse on call at the Otago Correctional Facility the night Jai Davis arrived told a Coroner she advised corrections officers to call an ambulance if his health deteriorated.
Mr Davis was found dead early on the 14th of February 2011, at the time he was placed into a dry cell because he was suspected of concealing drugs.
An inquest is currently being held into his death.
A former nurse at the OCF, Sandra Lawrie told the court she worked the night shift, before being placed on call.
She said prior to leaving if his condition was to change, officers should ring an ambulance before ringing her.
