The storm battering the country is still ongoing, but for many areas hit by the rain and wind, the damage is already clear.

The Thames-Coromandel District faces another massive clean up, with roads ripped apart by stormy weather yet again.

Huge waves have damaged parts of State Highway 25, also known as the Thames Coast Road.

District Council Mayor Sandra Goudie said the road has suffered from years of under funding, and the Transport Agency needs to step up.

"The Thames Coast Road has just been absolutely blasted. We've got drop outs, half roads in places, debris all over the place."

She said that more money is needed to strengthen it.

"There hasn't been the money spent on it and it hasn't been maintained to any great degree, so of course it's going to be unstable."

Locals at Whakatete Bay reported half the width of the road is washed away in places and the road is covered by debris.

The New Zealand Red Cross and Defence Force are in the area to assist with the clean up, after a storm surge at 11am on Friday struck towns along the Firth of Thames.

The Pauanui water treatment plant is closed and residents are being asked to conserve water.

About 60 people are at Te Puru Community Hall, where those forced from flooded homes and stranded motorists are gathered.

500 people have been affected by flood waters at Kaiaua.

Throughout the country, damage has been left in the storm's wake.

One woman was killed when a tree fell on her car in Rotorua.

In Auckland, the Half Moon Bay ferry terminal is closed due to storm damage and a man was rescued from Manukau Harbour after falling from a dinghy.

Waves pounded coastal areas in many parts of Auckland, especially in the east, disrupting traffic and power was out in many places.

More than 40mm of rain has fallen on Auckland since Thursday morning, which is more than the city received in November and December combined, forecaster NIWA said.

In Wellington heavy rain on Friday afternoon flooded low-lying areas in the eastern suburbs.

More than 200mm has fallen on parts of the Gisborne region, 130mm on Coromandel Peninsula, 111mm in Rotorua, 84mm in Kerikeri and 36mm in Blenheim, MetService said.

In the South Island, minor surface flooding has hit Christchurch, while surface flooding and minor rockfalls led to the closure of State Highway 1 near Kaikoura, less than a month after the newly rebuilt coastal highway reopened.

The front is expected to clear the country by midday on Saturday.
