Updated 9.50am: A lone piper signalled the start of the Anzac Day centenary dawn service at Pukeahu this morning in Wellington.

Wellington streets are packed with people this morning, especially around the National War Memorial.

The crowd was vast. Tens of thousands turned out.

Australia's Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove has made the trip over, and Acting Prime Minister Bill English and Governor-General Sir Jerry Mateparae also took part.

Just minutes earlier soldiers arrived at Anzac Square.

Newstalk ZB's Laura Dooney says it's eerily quiet, despite the massive crowds.

"Thousands upon thousands of people have turned up for the Dawn Service. Pukeahu, the new National War Memorial Park is absolutely packed. People have filled the streets nearby where screens have been set up to view the proceedings."

Hundreds of children were up early to commemorate.

Laura Dooney says the usually windy capital has dished up a very still and cold morning for the occasion.

"The thing I've noticed the most is that the children are really wrapped up, really warm, and they're standing there very quietly, obviously understanding the seriousness of the situation."

One of the soldiers taking part in Wellington's dawn service says he was humbled to be there.

Rodger Moana says he's amazed by the turnout at Pukeahu National War Memorial.

"I've been to many ANZAC Parades around the world, and this would have to be one of the top ones."

Young Sea Scouts were among the crowds.

11 year old Cameron says he's very proud to be there.

"It was amazing seeing all the stuff, but also sad remembering all those who fought for us."

Events in Wellington continued with a wreath laying ceremony at the Cenotaph on Parliament grounds.

The area around the Cenotaph has been completely refurbished for this year's commemorations.
