Middlemore Hospital National Burns Centre has isolated three patients, infected by highly unusual multi-drug resistant organisms.

They have put in place measure to stop the organisms spreading.

The hospital is limiting the number of admissions and is asking other burns centres to take patents until they are confident the risk is contained.

Acting Chief Medical Officer, Vanessa Thornton says they are also considering options for transferring very serious burns cases to Australia, but it will be on a case-by-case basis.

"Ideally we'll try to manage patients within New Zealand, in the regional units, and the National unit, but our burns surgeons have very good links with the east coast of Australia."

She says they're taking measures to prevent serious implications for burns patients.

"We have these patients in isolation rooms, and using infection control at all times, and we've isolated a theatre for them to use to restrict the chance of infection spreading."
