The timing of our summer holidays is being blasted as "bizarre".

A cold and wet January across most of the country has led some to question if we'd be better to have the summer break in February.

WeatherWatch's Philip Duncan said that would be a good move, as the last five years has seen summer shift back by about a month.

"Why on earth do we go back to school in February? It makes no sense at all - it's the hottest month of the year."

"Over the last five years or so we've absolutely seen a delay in the seasons, and they have been running about a month late."

New Zealand has been running cooler than average for this time of year - with the South Island taking a beating since mid December.

This comes after wild weather along the both sides of the South Island.

Gusts of up to 154km/h and heavy rain has led to major road closures and delays for commuters.

MetService meteorologist Tom Adams said the frequency and intensity of the weather features we've been getting is unusual.

"The windows between them - the spells of fine weather that we get when we can do our washing and mow the lawns and enjoy a bit of summer - they're looking like they're getting better."
