UPDATED 11.12AM: Commuters are being warned to drive home before 10am this morning to avoid Labour Weekend delays.

NZTA says traffic will start building around most of the country at 10, with many places having the worst traffic delays between midday and seven pm.

State highways near Karapiro, Taupiri and Wellsford are usually the worst - expect heavy traffic for most of the day.

State Highway 29, two, and State Highway One between Waiouru and Taihape will also be affected.

State Highway Five traffic north of Napier will be heavy most of the afternoon, as will north of Wellington on State Highway One and Two.

South Island congestion tomorrow afternoon will be worst in Waipara, north of Christchurch, State Highway One between Ashburton and Christchurch and again at Kaikoura.

State Highway 73 near Arthur's Pass, seven near Lewis Pass and State Highway Six near Queenstown.

The Labour Weekend holiday road toll stands at two.

One person died on State Highway One near Pokeno just after 4.30 this morning.

Their car hit the median strip and then collided with a truck.

A woman who was critically injured in the crash near Paekakariki yesterday has died in Wellington Hospital.

She was 79 year-old Te Rauoriwa Daphne Pomare, from Levin.

Police are investigating what caused the crash.

Five people died on the road last Labour Weekend.

The toll period extends from four o'clock Friday afternoon to six o'clock Tuesday morning.

A quad bike rolled at Kuratau near Taupo about one o'clock this morning, killing one person and putting a 28-year-old woman in hospital.

A third person was unhurt.

A rider died on the way to hospital following a crash at a street racing event on Herbert Street in Greymouth just before 11 this morning.

As these occurred off a public road, it's not counted in the toll.
