Beef and Lamb New Zealand is not sold on the idea of health and sustainability warning labels on meat.

There have been suggestions to introduce an agricultural greenhouse gas tax, and to market promotional campaigns to decrease meat consumption.

Head of Nutrition for Beef + Lamb New Zealand Fiona Greig says another label could further confuse consumers.

"We know from our consumer insights that price and quality come ahead of environmental concerns."

Greig also says there must be a holistic approach to any sustainability message so that consumers have an understanding about what a sustainable diet actually means.

"There's already confusion around how to read labelled pack and adding another label could further confuse consumers."

It follows findings that eating too much processed and red meat causes serious health problems like bowel and colon cancer, diabetes, heart disease and even death.
