The Ypres Memorial Garden in Hamilton aims to mirror World War One trenches.
The garden in Memorial Park has just been officially unveiled.
Honorary Consul of Belgium Lisbeth Jacobs says it's a modern, more hospitable version of a trench.
"If you look at the cobblestones on the bottom of the water...a lot of the trenches were filled with water in the winter time. It's a very stylised representation of what the trenches actually looked like."
Jacobs says every year New Zealand flags are flown in small villages around Ypres.
"We cannot stress enough how grateful that the people in Western Europe are for the sacrifices that the boys from New Zealand made."
Hamilton Mayor Julie Hardaker says the garden is a great asset.
"I think it's absolutely beautiful and what's really special about it is that it's a very modern interpretation of something that has significant meaning."
