The Grenfell Tower fire in London has sparked calls for greater oversight of New Zealand building standards.

At least 79 people are feared dead in the Grenfell fire, and reports suggest the building's highly flammable cladding may not have met the building code.

Building Industry Federation chief executive Bruce Kohn said many below standard products have surfaced in New Zealand, including drainage, wire and piping.

He said dodgy glass windows could also pose serious harm.

"In the case of glass which may be used in balustrades or balconies or windows, then yes of course there is dangers associated with it."

Kohn fears the issue could be more widespread.

"There have been what you might term similar products in use in New Zealand for a number of years. Nobody is quite sure the extent of use in this country."

Building and Construction minister Nick Smith has confirmed a small number of buildings in Auckland may have similar cladding to that used on the Grenfell Tower.
