Former Police Association president and Labour Party election candidate Greg O'Connor has been named winner of the Communicator of the Year Award.

Mark Blackham from Blackland PR said Mr O'Connor could have won the title almost any of the last 20 years.

"He is the epitome of good communication, particularly with a very New Zealand style- unassuming, there's no artifice or pretence in there, he says what he means."

The Communicator of the Year is selected by Massey University students and Blackland PR.

Greg O'Connor said he's stoked about the award, and he's revealed his recipe for success.

"I think the important thing with any communication, particularly in the media is be yourself."
