Police are concerned dodgy GPS directions are leading tourists on their way to Hobbiton down an unsuitable, dangerous rural Waikato road.

GPS maps are directing drivers from Rotorua to Hobbiton down Rangitanuku Road, which is a small, narrow rural road with a number of blind corners.

Sergeant Graham McGurk says the drivers aren't at fault, it's the directions they're following.

"I myself have seen people, with some confusion, coming off State Highway 29 to drive up Rangitanuku Road, stopping, reversing - not sure where they should should be going."
