The Government is being urged to do more to help people who're going through gender reassignment.

Parliament's Health Committee is being petitioned by Tom Hamilton who's arguing there's inadequate public funding for gender reassignment health services.

He says there are a variety of standards of care across District Health Boards and those seeking gender reassignment aren't being cared for effectively.

"The long term effect of this perceived stigma and discrimination is that their well being is affected and health issues are ignored too long for effective care to benefit them."
