Frustration water safety lessons not being learned

Water safety advocates are getting more and more frustrated that their messages aren't getting through.

Four people were pulled from Porirua Harbour yesterday after their boat flipped, and none of them were wearing life-jackets.

Two fisherman were saved yesterday morning after their boat overturned near the Chatham Islands.

On top of that a person died after the boat they were in flipped on the Hokitika River yesterday afternoon.

Water Safety CEO Jonty Mills said he can't understand how people still don't follow simple safety tips.

"Look, it is frustrating, because they might seem obvious but they are the things that boaties get into trouble with, so we need to work together to change that mindset and save lives."

Mills said more people will be hopping in the boat as temperatures improve.

"We are heading into the boating season, when more and more people are heading out."

"There are a number of factors that we'd strongly encourage and it might seem obvious, things like not going out if it's not suitable and wearing lifejackets."

More than 50 people have drowned so far this year in New Zealand.
