Wellington's infamous wind is being employed to help people make a decision in the upcoming flag referendum.

The five flag options up for contention will be hoisted in unison atop the Wellington Town Hall at midday today.

The current New Zealand flag will continue to fly close by, above the Municipal Office Building in Civic Square.

Mayor Celia Wade-Brown initiated the move, saying it allows the public to view the new flag options in action.
