Fewer prisoners testing positive for drugs

Figures from the Ministry of Corrections show fewer prisoners are testing positive for drugs and more are taking part in drug and alcohol treatment programmes.

During the 2014/2015 year, 3.7 per cent of prisoners tested positive for drugs, which Minister for Corrections Sam Lotu-Iiga said is a big improvement from 2008/2009 figures, where 11 per cent of prisoners had tested positive.

Mr Lotu-Iiga believes reducing the demand for and availability of drugs in prisons creates better rehabilitation outcomes for prisoners.

"If we can get on top of their drug and alcohol addictions, we've got a better chance of reducing the rates of re-offending."

He said the Government is spending almost nine million dollars in the next three years on post-release treatment programmes.

Mr Lotu-liga said the aim is to help offenders stay drug and alcohol free, so they can eventually get work and contribute to society.
