A mural in the middle of an earthquake demolition site miraculously has only superficial damage, but its fate remains unknown.

The demolition of 61 Molesworth street is almost complete, with just the ground level bays where the mural sits remaining.

Sculptor Jim Allen was commissioned to produce the artwork in the early 1960s.

Wellington City Council's general manager for building control Mike Scott said its unknown if or how the mural will be removed.

He said it's in the hands of the property owner but the council and the city do have an interest in it.
