UPDATED 9:20pm: There's been a fatal incident at the railway station in Te Kuiti.

Police say a pedestrian was struck by a train passing through Te Kuiti around 6pm.

That person has died as a result of their injuries.

Police say their inquiries into exactly what happened are continuing, and the railway line is closed until further notice.

Newstalk ZB's Juliette Sivertsen says there's a large police presence, and the entire area has been closed off.

"A few people gathered around and trying to figure out what's happened. There's a blue tarpaulin that's been set up in the corner, covering whatever's behind."

Witnesses say they saw one child being hit and another being injured.
