People who've lost family members in the forestry sector are welcoming a safety review, calling it a step in the right direction.

The final report of the Independent Forestry Safety Review panel has been released, with recommendations aimed at improving safety.

Families spokesman Wiremu Edmonds says there's now an opportunity for change.

"Even though it's only one step, it's one step in the right direction.

"This does not compensate for us as families who have lost loved ones in the industry, but what this does do is it provides opportunities for our views to be heard."

Forestry Contractors Association President Jacob Kajavala is confident the report will lead to change.

"The report gives unity to the industry that we haven't seen before. It acknowledges the importance of the worker."
