Extra services to clear fog-hit flights

UPDATED 8.43AM: Extra services are being put on and a larger aircraft is being brought in to deal with a massive backlog of travellers at Wellington Airport.

More than 100 flights were cancelled yesterday and more have been cancelled this morning due to sea fog and low cloud.

Air New Zealand plans to resume flights at 9am, with six extra Airbus A320 services and a Boeing 777 being redeployed for busier routes.

Meteorologist Ravi Kandula says a northerly flow will start to build mid-morning which will flush the fog out, but it'll still be around first thing.

The airport has been providing blankets, snacks, and bottled water to passengers who have had to spend the night at the airport.

Vickie Davis has been stranded in Wellington for two nights, waiting to get back to Nelson, and has been helping some of those she's been stranded with.

"I had two elderly ladies I'm helping, and I've got one left now and it's a lot of pressure," Davis said. "One is eighty-four years old. I mean, goodness gracious."

Adelaide resident Jodie Ackland has spent the night at the airport, having been there since 1pm yesterday.

"We waited and waited and waited, until we finally got updated at five-thirty to say that the flight was cancelled," she said.

"By that time there was no accomodation left in Wellington so we've had to camp out overnight."
