Effect of oil spill on birdlife unknown

There are fears birds that live deep in the wetlands will be most affected by the Tauranga Harbour oil spill.

Australasian bitterns, fern birds and rails live deep in the estuary and mangroves and are rarely seen by people.

Mauao Area Wildlife Trust Director Julia Graham says the birds are so shy they'd never find them.

"They hide deep in the mangroves. They're the ones that are going to be affected and we probably will never know how badly they're affected.

"But because we can't see them and because they're so shy, they won't come out around us."
