Dotcom's search warrants bid dismissed

UPDATED 2:43pm: Kim Dotcom's financial woes are about to get worse, with an order to pay $35,000 over a failed bid to have search warrants ruled illegal.

His team had taken their case all the way to the Supreme Court.

They argued the warrants were invalid because they gave too broad powers to seize property, while not being specific enough about the offences which caused the search.

But today, in a majority decision, the Supreme Court has dismissed that argument.

Its ruling says the warrants could have been drafted more precisely, but Dotcom and his co-accused were reasonably able to understand the issue, because officers on the scene gave an explanation before beginning the search.

The claim also raised issues with how computers were seized and searched.

The Supreme Court says that should be dealt with elsewhere.

Dotcom's lawyer Ron Mansfield says that leaves a door open for Dotcom.

"That effectively means he could bring civil proceedings, seeking damages for the way in which that material was dealt with and/or searched by the police. A decision hasn't been made in relation to that yet."

Dotcom takes to Twitter

Kim Dotcom's taken to social networking site Twitter to voice his disappointment with a Supreme Court decision.

Kim Dotcom tweeted yesterday that he was waiting for the ruling, questioning if it would be an outcome for Santa Claus or Mickey Mouse.

He's now followed that up with a second tweet, only saying, "Mickey Mouse".
