Another chapter in the saga surrounding ChristChurch Cathedral.

The Minister for Greater Christchurch Regeneration is one of those disappointed that the final decision on the cathedral's fate, won't be made until September.

Nicky Wagner said the matter has been surrounded by question marks for far too long.

"This is a very divisive issue, and with that cathedral sitting broken and neglected in the centre of the city, it's not good for anyone."

The decision to reinstate the building or find a contemporary replacement will be made by the 225 members of the Canterbury Synod.

Ms Wagner said the group led the original cathedral building project in 1859.

"They were the people who set up the Cathedral Commission which was to support the build of the cathedral in the first place."

She said she's working with the bishop to speed up the process.

"I'm not sure quite how Synod works. I know it's supposed to met in the beginning of September. I don't know if they'll be prepared to met any earlier, but I can ask."

There is a split at the helm of the Great Christchurch Building Trust with Trust co-chair Philip Burdon hoping this decision will help the process move forward.

"Let's view this ambition in the good faith that we believe it's been made and do our best to help assist in a constructive solution."

But the man he heads the trust with, sees it very differently.

Jim Anderton is rubbishing Bishop Victoria Mathews' decision to leave it to the Synod.

"If you want to know who runs the Synod, she does. She will make a decision. She already has made a decision to not make a decision."

Mr Burdon hopes the members are given all the information, which they are happy to help with.

"The important thing is that it's an informed decision and obviously we're anxious to be sympathetically involved in the level of detail that's given."
