The government is doing too little to prevent cyclists from dying on New Zealand roads, a cycling lobby argues.
A cyclist was killed after colliding with a truck in Hastings on Thursday night - the third fatal crash involving a truck and cyclist in less than a month.
The Cycling Action Network runs an NZTA campaign to teach truck drivers and cyclists to be more aware of each other.
Network spokesman Patrick Morgan says the government is doing great things like improving infrastructure, but it needs to be doing more.
"There's a real opportunity here to save lives by adding cost-effective safety features to trucks that are quite common in other countries," Morgan said.
An NZTA panel floated the idea of making side-under-protection mandatory, and improving mirrors, sensors, and cameras two years ago, however those suggestions have not been implemented yet.
