Cyclone Gita is about to hit the country but that's not getting in the way of a 12-day cycle from Auckland to Wellington to highlight the effects of climate change.
Five Generation Zero activists promoting the Zero Carbon Act kicked off their campaign by cycling across Auckland's Harbour Bridge last night.
They are now heading south, set to arrive at Parliament in Wellington on March 1st.
Group spokesman James Young-Drew says they're taking a safety-focused approach to their trip and are checking the forecast every few hours to ensure they're not doing anything silly.
"The fact that we will be cycling through some pretty dodgy weather, I think, further highlights our cause and our commitment to building support for climate action," Mr Young-Drew says.
Their route takes them through as many towns as possible down the country, and they plan to stop and talk about the effects of climate change and the Zero Carbon Act.
"We're trying to arrange to see as many MPs and mayors and councillors along the way as we can," he says.
The group also wants to have discussions with "normal New Zealanders" about climate change and how it affects them, as well as what they think should happen.
Consultation on the Government's Act begins in May.
