Crews gear up for volatile summer as fires cause damage

It's too early to count damage to properties and livestock in Otago as two large fires continue to burn.

Three crews are back at a blaze in Dunback which flared up again because of strong winds, while embers of the Saddle Hill fire in Mosgiel have also reignited, forcing crews back to the scene and injuring a woman who is now in a serious condition in Dunedin Hospital.

The fire damaged around nine houses and forced residents to evacuate and livestock to be moved, but Principal Otago Rural Fire Officer Stephanie Rotarangi said reports of lost livestock and buildings can't be checked yet.

"We've had some structural damage to two houses but mainly outhouses and sheds. I would imagine that some other houses have had smoke damage," Rotarangi said.

After threatening properties yesterday, a blaze between Barrys Bay and Akaroa in Canterbury has been extinguished. State Highway 75 is still closed in the area but State Highway One is back open.

Christchurch crews are also on the scene of a hall fire on Domain Terrace in Spreydon.

Fire communications shift manager Riwai Grace said with high winds possible, rural fires need constant monitoring.

Crews are continuing to monitor that area, as well as fires which have been put out in Oxford and another area known as 'the dunes' between Rakaia and Rolleston.

Rural fire teams are gearing up for what they fear could be a very busy season as unseasonably warm temperatures have hung around the region for the last few days, with many parts broaching the 30 degree mark.

South Canterbury Rural Fire District Chairman Alistair Munro says with a dry summer predicted they want everything to be ready.

"Our staff are on standby and we've got all our equipment up to standard in anticipation, but hopeful nothing serious will happen."

Because there are no fire bans in place, people still need to take care, Munro said.

"Fire can be man's best friend but he can be an enemy as well, so just be very careful. It's not just lighting intentionally lit fires, sparks and things like that can cause fires."
