Crackdown on red light runners

Drivers who run red lights in Auckland and Wellington - or speed up to get through orange lights - are in for a shock next year, with police installing more cameras to catch offenders.

Seven new cameras will be put at high risk intersections in Auckland, and another near Wellington's bypass.

Road policing assistant commissioner Dave Cliff says the selection criteria for where the new cameras will go was easy.

Te Rakau Drive is one, and along with the six others, is easily among the worst intersections in Auckland for red light related crashes.

Cliff says drivers need to learn the risk of having a crash doesn't outweigh the minute or two they save.

"With any of these sorts of things, they can be random and they occur at any time so there's no safe time to red light run, there's no safe time to accelerate and travel at high speed through an intersection," he says.
