Updated 11.17am: Wellington recycling staff are being offered counselling following the death of a colleague on the job.

20-year-old Junior Hunt was critically injured in Thorndon on Monday, after getting trapped in a mechanism of the recycling truck he drove.

He passed away in Wellington Hospital yesterday afternoon.

EnviroWaste CEO Gary Saunder says they're all devastated by the tragedy.

He says family and staff have been offered counselling and support as they begin to work through their grief.

Multiple investigations are being carried out in the wake of the death of a Wellington man, crushed while operating a recycling truck.

Recycling Company Envirowaste, the Wellington City Council and WorkSafe will all investigate the death of Junior Hunt.

Details of how Mr Hunt became trapped in the equipment are still unknown, but Envirowaste do not believe the incident was caused by mechanical error.
