Corrections under fire for housing sex offender next to school

The principal of a school just metres from where a high-risk sex offender was placed, says she understands he had to be put somewhere, but doesn't know why she wasn't told.

The convicted rapist was released from prison last week, but Mangere's Te Kura Maori o Nga Tapuwae principal Arihia Stirling wasn't informed by Corrections.

Ms Stirling said she didn't find out until Monday, and only then through a member of the public.

"I understand now the enormity and the issues that they were working through, but I still felt that we could have worked together on it instead of being isolated from the incident."

Corrections has promised to move the offender out of the property today, and said it won't put another sex offender in that same house.

It insisted it was only ever an interim measure until a second property's security was improved.

Corrections said the offender had two staff members monitoring him at all times, and a security guard was also at the address.
