Police are advising drivers in the Coromandel to be cautious today as a major cycle race is underway.

The K2 Road Cycle Classic started in the town centre of Coromandel this morning and and goes through Thames, Tairua and Whitianga.

Sergeant Jim Corbett says drivers should exercise patience when encountering groups of cyclists, and only pass when it's safe.

He says police will be present in the area to make sure the race is a success for all.
