More needs to be done for Auckland police officers living in an increasingly unaffordable city, the Labour Party says.

The police's latest Four Year Plan said the cost of living in our biggest city is becoming unaffordable for staff.

Labour's Police spokesman Stuart Nash said he doesn't think police should be paid different salaries across the country, but Auckland's cost of living is a problem.

"In exceptional circumstances like perhaps we are finding ourselves in Auckland at the moment, we need to do something to top up the salaries of Auckland officers, if it is a massive disincentive to being based in Auckland."

However, Police Association boss Chris Cahill said It's not just Auckland Police officers feeling the strain from the high costs of living .

"We can't just say it's an Auckland problem. I mean I was also in Queenstown recently and the cost of living in Queenstown is very expensive there is no such thing as affordable housing."

Cahill said his members are giving him a clear message that the cost of living is hurting staff.

"The unaffordability of housing in fact they are having to, if they do purchase a house, buy much further away from where they work, then you have the added cost of travel."

The Police said they offer internal transfers to other districts if requested.
