The Government has appointed a consultant to help work out the future of the earthquake-damaged ChristChurch Cathedral.
Plans for the future of the iconic building in the central city have been stalled for years as the church faced ongoing opposition from heritage campaigners.
Bishop Victoria Matthews has made the announcement about the consultant in Christchurch tonight.
She said the consultant will engage with both the experts representing the church and the Great Christchurch Building Trust.
Bishop Matthews said the church has agreed to participate on the proviso that it's not financially responsible for the cost of the consultant or any outcomes.
It's hoped that they'll know details about the future of the Cathedral before Christmas.
