A united front in the battle against pests has the Department of Conservation sold on a radical new approach to protecting our wildlife.
A barrier-less fence system has been given $20 million in funding, with organisers hoping for a pest-free New Zealand in 40 years.
DOC director general Lou Sanson says the buy-in from affected parties gives the programme a genuine chance of succeeding.
"We all think it's a huge vision. This is a step away along that path and it's pretty incredible we've got conservation, dairy industry, farming coming together with conservation."
Sanson says it's an incredibly innovative project.
"We're thinking of things that have never been done before.
"New Zealand has led the world on island eradications. We want to lead the world on how we clear pests and prevent re-invasion."
