The Government's confident we haven't suffered any major damage to our international reputation following the infant formula scare.

A 60-year-old man was arrested yesterday, on charges related to the threats to spike formula with 1080 poison.

Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy says there was a lot of concern overseas, but he's confident they managed to plug any damage.

"We kept in touch with them, we provided them with reliable information, we've introduced the extra testing that gave them a lot of comfort."

Guy said the Ministry of Primary Industries and police worked closely together to produce the result.

"They've been working very, very closely together, they've been sharing information, intelligence. The main point is is that our food safety is paramount."

Labour's Primary Industries spokesperson Damien O'Connor said the arrest great news, and agrees it's an important step forward for our dairy industry.

"As we predicted, one nutter and it was really important that we can go out into the international market place and say that we don't have any campaign or organised move that would in any way put our food at risk," O'Connor said.

"I'm sure there has been damage, I'm sure people out in the marketplace had to give reassurance. The uncertainty over who did this would have made it hard for them."
