Cheap one dollar loaves of bread are hurting bakers.
Bakers and Pastrycooks Union Secretary Norm Holley says as a result of this cheap bread middle of the range bread isn't selling.
He says that's of real concern as supermarkets don't buy the unsold bread, it's owned by bakers and if it's not sold bakers have to pick it up and take it away.
"And if it's not sold they've got to take it back at their cost and find something else to do with it. It goes into the tip, the pig man, or it goes into crumb for stock food or it goes into bread crumbs."
Mr Holley says the industry is under siege, and the impact on bakers could be huge.
"It all depends how long this war on the bread stays for. It will have huge implications on us next year or when we come up for the negotiations of those collective employment agreements."
