Concern for student health after threats

There's concern for the welfare of students following the recent threats to universities.

Threats were made to Massey and Victoria universities yesterday and Otago on Tuesday.

A note has been found threatening staff at Massey, and the registry office was evacuated. A post on an online site known for anonymous comments makes reference to the Virginia Tech shooting when making threats to the Otago campus. The Murphy Building at Victoria University was evacuated and Kelburn Parade cordoned off after a note threatening a bomb attack.

President of the New Zealand Union of Students Associations Rory McCourt said students are under considerable pressure, especially with exams just around the corner.

"To have the prospect of a bomb on their own campus, a place where they work and learn and study, is a very concerning thing."

He said he is worried the threats will create an atmosphere of fear among staff and students.
