Tonight's vigil for Alex Fisher is being considered the first steps in the healing process for the Levin community.

The body of the ten year old was found on Thursday at Waitarere Beach, with Police revealing yesterday he'd suffered head injuries.

Horowhenua Mayor Brendan Duffy said the vigil's been driven by the community.

"Arranged by the Waitarere community it is their chance to express obviously their sympathy and I think get a little bit of a healing process underway."

Duffy said the real challenge will be for Alex's family.

"For the rest of the community they get back to, you know their lifestyle but I just think this cloud sits over our head."

He is praising his community for their support of Alex Fisher's family.

He said ministers from a number of churches will be present and they'll be a waiata and a symbolic tree planting ceremony.

"This is one of those wonderful occasions where the local community are taking the responsibility to lead the programme it's certainly not one that I'm leading."

The vigil will take place at 7pm in the Waitarere Domain.

The funeral service for Fisher is expected to be held at 1 o'clock on Tuesday afternoon.

Police have urged Waitarere locals this weekend to thoroughly check properties for any signs of theft or disturbance.

Alex Fisher was the youngest of five siblings.
