A woman is being taken to Christchurch hospital with serious injuries after a tree fell on her car this morning.

Fire crews were working to free the woman earlier today after she became trapped in her car by the tree in West Melton in Canterbury's Selwyn District.

Three fire engines were sent to Weedons Rd to free one person, the southern fire communications shift manager said.

The call came in just before 7.40am and the person was still trapped 30 minutes later.

It was not immediately clear whether the person was injured.

St John spokesman Gerard Campbell said the woman was on the way to hospital about 9am.

Northwest winds are gusting up to 130 kilometres.

Fire and emergency, shift manager, Andrew Norris said they had to cut the injured person out of their car.

"A tree was blown over and landed on a car that was travelling down the road."

Winds are expected to ease this afternoon.
