Christchurch's cenotaph surrounded by weeds and rubble is finally looking for a new home.
The Christchurch RSA are breathing a sigh of relief after finally getting permission to move its closed off cenotaph.
The memorial has been inaccessible since the quakes, when the damaged Cathedral and part of the Square was fenced off.
Yesterday was only the second time the RSA's been allowed to visit the cenotaph since.
A small group laid a wreath for the Passchendaele centenary.
President Pete Dawson said the Church Property Trust has finally said yes to their push to relocate the memorial, after years of campaigning.
He said the current situation is just not good enough.
"The guys had to walk through knee high grass and weeds just to get to the cenotaph. In our view that is absolute and total disrespect to the sacrifice that that monument was put up to remember."
Dawson said the next step is finding out what the move will cost and how to pay for it.
"There's a very very strong potential for more damage to occur and we can't afford for that to happen."
The RSA are hoping to move the cenotaph to Cranmer Square.
