Changes are coming for the Christchurch store that's been robbed 10 times in eight months.

The Woolston Night N Day was a target again yesterday - this time the perpetrator left empty handed as the attendant locked herself in the safe room.

Night N Day CEO Tony Allison said they're taking advice from Police and WorkSafe to try to stop the robberies.

"We're looking at how do we open the windows up so people from the outside can see in, and it also gives the visibility to the operator outside the store.

"There's additional cameras that we've now got in place, more connectivity to the police. Those are the things we've worked on and are working on."

But the robberies have nearby shop owners worried. One who doesn't want to be named for fear she'll be targeted, said they need the robberies to stop.

She's not just worried for her safety but the future of her business.

"People will get scared and won't come into the area at all.

"I've got security obviously, but at the end of the day it is what it is. You can't stop them coming into your shop."

She said they need more police back on the beat to prevent this from happening.

"Once they took that out the area has just got so bad."

However, Mr Allison has no complaints when it comes to Police.

"We've definitely got a really good working relationship with police. We've got good connectivity with them immediately so they can see what's going on at site."

Store manager David said the shop has strong security measures and the thieves are wasting their time.

"The police have been brilliant. They've actually arrested 15 people in relation to the robberies. The trouble seems to be with the age of people that are just getting back out on the street again and have no fear of getting caught."

David said most of the would-be thieves are aged between 15 and 18.

"It's not just us, we're just making news because it's happened so often but it seems to be ongoing in Christchurch at the moment. The police seem to be catching these people."

He said harsher penalties are needed to stamp out the problem.

Police Area Manager Paul Reeves said they've actually increased their presence already, with officers doing drive-bys and visits to businesses regularly.
