The Highlanders return to Dunedin this morning as Super Rugby champions for the first time.

They are due at the airport shortly before 11, where it is expected there will be a rousing welcome from fans.

An official street parade is being organised at lunch time tomorrow.

It begins at the Dental School and progresses along both Frederick Street and George Street to the Octagon.

The game, which took place last night, saw the Highlanders beat the Hurricanes 21-14 in an enthralling final at Westpac stadium.

Senior Sergeant Andrzej Kowalczyk said fans were in good spirits before and after the final.

"Police were really impressed with the behaviour of the crowd. There was only two minor arrests at the stadium itself during the game, and about eight people evicted in total just for smuggling in alcohol. So I was really pleased with how the night turned out."
