Registered Master Builders is backing the call to ban imported building products potentially laced with asbestos.

The Royal Society of New Zealand and Prime Minister's chief scientist have found no significant health risk from the levels of asbestos after the Canterbury rebuild.

Their report also calls for a ban on imported building materials containing asbestos.

Registered Master Builders CEO David Kelly says the challenge now will be finding out what's in the products.

"They have parts that have embedded asbestos in different components. We do think it needs to have another close look at to see whether there are products that could pose a risk some years down the track."
