There are calls this morning from Coastguard for boaties to treat the silly season with sense.
Volunteers around the country have been gearing up for the summer holiday - their busiest time.
Chief executive Patrick Holmes says it's a costly operation, at around $15 million a year.
"Just putting a boat on the water before we've engaged in any kind of search would be about $400 each time we put a boat on the water."
Patrick Holmes says using common sense on the water can be the difference between getting home safely, and needing Coastguard.
